Why Utah is different right now

Most US states still require a utility interconnection agreement (ICA) before you can connect a plug-in solar system. Utah changed that.

Under HB 340, Utah homeowners can install a plug-in solar system up to 1,200W without applying to their utility. No paperwork, no waiting, no long approval process.

It's the clearest, most straightforward path to plug-in solar in the country.

Common questions

FAQ

Do I need utility approval in Utah?

For systems up to 1,200W, no. Utah's HB 340 (enacted 2025) allows plug-in solar systems without a utility interconnection agreement. This applies to zero-export systems like the Craftstrom kit.

What does "zero-export" mean, and why does it matter?

The Craftstrom system uses a Smart PowerMeter to monitor your home's real-time consumption. The inverters adjust output every 0.1 seconds to match only what your home is already using, so nothing ever flows back to the grid. This is why it's safe, grid-compatible, and why Utah's law specifically covers this type of system.

How much will I actually save on my electric bill?

At Utah's average rate of 14¢/kWh, the 1200W system produces roughly 2,100–2,400+ kWh per year, saving approximately $294–$336+ annually. At higher electricity rates and in sunny areas, the savings also goes up.

How long does installation take?

Most homeowners complete the installation in 2–4 hours. You'll need a standard outdoor 120V outlet and a sunny spot: backyard, deck, patio, or fence line. No drilling into exterior walls, no roof access, and no professional required.
